Milk fat globule membrane

Milk Fat Globule Membrane

Fat component of the colostrum and milk contains the milk fat globules. These globules contain triacylglycerols forming 98% of total milk lipids and are surrounded by Milk Fat Globule Membrane. MFGM constituting polar lipids and bioactive proteins is a three-layered structure derived from mammary epithelial cells. It is because of MFGM, fat remains suspended in milk. MFGM serves as a carrier of fat-soluble vitamins and is visualised to encapsulate and carry drugs and other materials and protects the fat globules from degradation by enzymes.

There is strong scientific evidence from several experimental, preclinical and clinical studies in infants and children that MFGM is involved in neuronal development & enhancing brain function. MFGM also helps in modulating immune system, fighting infection, improving gut health and preventing cardiovascular problems, muscle and bone loss. MFGM has glycolipids and glycoproteins, namely, phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin, essential for infant brain development and improving cognition function in age related disorders as well. The antibacterial and antiviral properties (especially against rotavirus) of proteins such as lactoadherin and mucin in MFGM has been proven in infants fed with MFGM supplemented food formula.
